While kratom continues to be beloved by millions across the country, that hasn’t stopped numerous cities and states from enacting bans against the plant. Ever since the Southeast Asian plant has gained a foothold in the U.S., there has been controversy surrounding it, even though countless people have used these products for thousands of years. Just recently, Newport Beach, California’s city council approved an ordinance to ban kratom in the city. Here’s everything you need to know.

Reason for the Ban

In February, Councilwoman Lauren Kleiman introduced possibly banning kratom, including its sale and distribution. She based it on inaccurate information regarding safety despite limited evidence suggesting this is the case. She mentioned that the FDA has not authorized kratom use and also utilized a staff report from the city’s police to come to her final decision.

Additionally, Kleiman compared kratom to marijuana, though the two are totally different. However, she added that if any of the information changes in the future, the council could rescind the ban. In the meantime, Kleiman explained that the city’s residents could go to other places to buy kratom products.

What’s next?

The ordinance passed and was put on a consent calendar later in February. Council members gave the final approval in March. Newport Beach’s city spokesman confirmed the kratom ban will go into effect in April. Currently, many residents don’t want to see this happen and hope that the city will eventually overturn the ban.
