Ever since kratom became popular in the U.S., various states have put restrictions in place to regulate its use. On the other hand, some states have outright banned the products. One state that straddles the line is Illinois. While the state as a whole has put regulations in place, such as age limits, individual cities have outright banned kratom products from their residents. In 2024, two new bans have arisen, so let’s look at these areas and what they mean for residents.

Orland Park

In April 2024, Orland Park voted unanimously to ban kratom. The city has taken a no-nonsense approach and has banned kratom in all forms. Under the new regulations, businesses can’t produce, distribute, or sell kratom. The city’s mayor believes kratom products haven’t been vetted thoroughly enough. The ban went into effect immediately.

Tinley Park

In June 2024, the city of Tinley Park officially banned the sale, possession, and distribution of kratom. That means individuals can’t use any products under any circumstances. As expected, this led to a lot of backlash from kratom advocates and businesses. To compromise, city leaders provided a 12-month grace period for companies that solely derive profit from kratom sales. For businesses that only partially rely on kratom sales, the city gave them a 6-month grace.

Many businesses are still unhappy with the decision. They agree that products should be regulated to keep consumers safe, but they don’t think they should be entirely restricted. These business owners are also concerned about their bottom line and all the money they will miss out on.
