In some states, kratom is pretty straightforward, and you can purchase products with relative ease. However, some states are more nuanced – case in point, Illinois. While kratom is legal at the state level, some Illinois cities have banned the Southeast Asian plant. History of Kratom in Illinois
In 2017, Jerseyville became the first city in Illinois to ban kratom. That same year, State Rep. Katie Stuart introduced a bill to the House that would have banned kratom statewide. However, it died in the Senate. By March 2018, the city of Alton prohibited the sale and possession of kratom within its city limits. Any businesses caught selling kratom would face fines and even the potential suspension of their business license. Following suit, in 2019, Glen Carbon unanimously passed an ordinance to ban citizens from purchasing, possessing, or selling kratom. Also, that year, Naperville passed a bill to ensure only people 21+ could buy kratom.
With kratom facing so many challenges in the state, legislators introduced House Bill 4681 in conjunction with the American Kratom Association (AKA) in 2019. The bill would have enacted the Kratom Consumer Protection Act (KCPA), which would have kept kratom legal and regulated to enhance consumer safety. Unfortunately, the KCPA didn’t make it out of committee. 
Ultimately, in 2020, another Illinois city council, Edwardsville, unanimously voted on a kratom ban. The fight to support kratom continued, and in 2021, Illinois lawmakers attempted again to introduce the KCPA. However, just like previously, it died in committee. 
What’s Next for Kratom in Illinois?  
Although several cities in Illinois have banned kratom, kratom enthusiasts have hope for the future of kratom in the state. They look at the state’s past attempts to pass the KCPA as a positive sign that Illinois takes kratom seriously. Although both previous attempts failed, kratom continues to gain supporters willing to do whatever it takes to create a legal pathway in Illinois. Additionally, the AKA remains committed to making its presence known to ensure kratom safety and a commonsense approach are top of mind.
