2021 saw the World Health Organization (WHO) considering scheduling kratom. If the organization had voted to schedule the plant, it would limit worldwide access to kratom products. The WHO decided to review kratom since they had concerns about its safety and whether it was helpful or harmful to its users. Kratom advocacy groups, supporters, and manufacturers spoke up to keep kratom legal, and it worked! The WHO decided to keep kratom legal internationally, so here’s a little more about the decision.
WHO’s Executive Members
After a thorough scientific review, the WHO decided not to ban kratom products. In December, the executive committee released a report showing that members voted 11-1against scheduling. According to Marijuana Moment, the members instead voted “to simply continue monitoring data on the health impacts of kratom over the next two to three years, rather than institute strict controls.” Additionally, the committee found that there wasn’t sufficient evidence to undertake a more critical review based on the science.
Kratom Warriors’ Role
Not only did science play a role in the WHO’s decision but also the thousand of kratom warriors who stood up in support of keeping the plant legal. About 80,000 individuals commented on their personal experiences with kratom and how the Southeast plant has helped them. The WHO’s executive members considered this input when making its decision. The senior fellow on public policy for the American Kratom Association, Mac Haddow, said the decision was “a great outcome for science.”
Kratom’s Future
Kratom’s future still isn’t crystal clear since there are still plenty of people on both sides of the kratom debate. While some believe that the plant should remain legal, others think the opposite. Some worry that kratom may remain legal in the U.S. but could be banned internationally. In October, U.S. lawmakers wrote a letter stating there is “no conclusive evidence that would warrant the United States voting in favor of an international control of this substance.” Further, lawmakers have advocated for spending money to study kratom more extensively to learn its benefits and how it can have a positive impact.
