Although kratom is native to Thailand, the country has traditionally had some of the strictest kratom laws in the world. For decades, the plant was illegal in Thailand, where residents couldn’t access kratom, which grew abundantly in the area. However, in 2021, the Thai government legalized the plant by removing it from its list of banned substances. Now, the government is going a step further and making it even more readily available thanks to a new law.
Kratom Act of 2022
On August 27, the Kratom Act of 2022 took effect. The law allows vendors to sell a variety of kratom-based products online. Previously, sellers were limited to only selling leaves and plants. As a result, farmers, vendors, and others will have more opportunities to sell kratom and can make more money. In turn, this also boosts the local economy. According to The Thaiger, a government spokesperson said, “The government’s policy is to turn kratom into an economic crop.”
Restrictions Under the New Law 
Although the law opens up kratom to the masses, lawmakers still placed several restrictions. For example, a seller must seek approval from the Narcotics Control Board to import and export kratom leaves. If the seller imports or exports without permission, the person could face a maximum of one year in jail. Additionally, the vendor could face a fine of up to 100,000 baht which equals about USD 2,750.
Further, vendors can’t sell to anyone under 18 or pregnant or breastfeeding women. If any vendor breaks these rules, they could face fines of up to 30,000 baht, equal to about USD 825. The act also restricts people selling kratom products in public parks, schools, and dorms. Those who violate could face a fine of 50,000 baht or about USD 1,370.
