Mississippi is back at it again, now, trying to ban kratom. For the second year in a row, state lawmakers are attempting to make kratom illegal. Currently, it’s not heavily regulated, and most residents can easily access products. However, many in Mississippi don’t feel like kratom should be legal and want it out of the state. One lawmaker, in particular, is leading the charge.
2022 Legislative Session
During the 2022 legislative session, Lee Yancey authored legislation to ban kratom, according to Daily Journal. While the House approved the bill by an overwhelming majority, it didn’t make it out of the Senate. If lawmakers had passed it, they would have scheduled kratom. What does this mean? Kratom would have been listed as a controlled substance. Although the first attempt failed, Yancey wasn’t ready to give up the effort.
2023 Legislative Session
For the 2023 legislative session set to begin in January, Yancey let it be known that he plans “to advance legislation to ban” kratom. This time around, he wants the Senate’s support since he didn’t have it for the previous session. Yancey has even gone so far as to get the Mississippi Medical Association involved and wants the association “to work on the Senate”
AKA Gets Involved
As usual, when kratom is under threat, the American Kratom Association (AKA) has gotten involved. The AKA’s senior fellow on public policy, Mac Haddow, has voiced the group’s opposition to the proposed legislation. Instead of an outright ban, he suggests keeping kratom legal but prohibiting anyone under 21years old from purchasing items. Further, Haddow wants legislators to ensure that kratom is unadulterated and contains no additives that could harm consumers.
