Alabama Senate
The Alabama Senate decided in 2016 to make the two main alkaloids of kratom, mitragynine and 7-hydroxymitragynine, illegal. The lawmakers classified these alkaloids as synthetic substances, even though that’s inaccurate. Kratom, including its alkaloids, is a natural plant that grows in Southeast Asia.
All this means that while technically kratom isn’t considered a controlled substance in Alabama, the alkaloids are, though. However, nobody can “sell, possess, manufacture, or distribute kratom in the state.” While this has caused some confusion, kratom is 100% banned in Alabama.
Attempts to Overturn the Ban
Anytime there’s a ban or even an attempt to ban kratom, plenty of people come out in opposition, including the American Kratom Association (AKA). Since kratom has grown in popularity in the U.S., the AKA has worked tirelessly to encourage states to pass the Kratom Consumer Protection Act. The act would overhaul the kratom industry through enhanced regulation to ensure improved consumer safety, including thorough testing, more accurate labeling, age limitations, and more.
Additionally, many kratom proponents have spoken out in support of kratom. However, Alabama lawmakers have not swayed and remain steadfast in keeping kratom illegal. At this time, there is no word that the state will lift the ban.
