While kratom has remained relatively untouched in Texas since its boom in popularity, all of that might be coming to an end. Why is that? State legislators believe since kratom has been unregulated, it might not be as safe as it could be. And, although other states have outright banned kratom or sought to, Texas is looking at regulation and have a couple of bills in the midst. 
Wild West 
For the past several years, Texas has taken a hands-off approach regarding kratom. There have been few restrictions, and customers can purchase products at will. Because of this, legislators and kratom supporters believe this has led to an environment where manufacturers are free to do whatever they like. This includes adulterating products, which can be dangerous in some cases.
Due to all the uncertainty in the market, Mac Haddow of the American Kratom Association (AKA) describes it as the “wild west.” According to KXAN, he said, “It’s the wild west in this marketplace. So you have bad actors that are [selling] products that are spiked.” He claims that these manufacturers include these additives to make items more potent to increase sales. 
Latest Legislation
Because of all this, the Texas legislature decided it should step in and do something. There are two pieces of legislation, Senate Bill 497 and House Bill 861. Both bills attempt to regulate kratom sales in the state. While some kratom supporters are concerned, they can rest assured that neither bill seeks to ban kratom. Instead, they would ensure vendors “adhere to safe manufacturer standards” and properly label items. If manufacturers violate any of these regulations, they could face a penalty.

What does the AKA think about the new legislation? Well, members are fully on board and look forward to seeing the bills progress. Haddow said, “We want to protect consumer access to safe kratom products, so we advocate for that around the United States.” Additionally, many supporters hope other states look into regulating kratom to enhance safety.
