The kratom battle continues to heat up in Missouri. Just last summer, Missouri’s governor vetoed a bill to regulate kratom. However, one legislator hasn’t given up and continues to push for kratom reform in the state. While many are hopeful about the latest bill, there’s been such a rocky road that anything can happen. The Common Link
At the beginning of 2022, Rep. Phil Christofanelli introduced the Kratom Consumer Protection Act. The legislation would have established standards for manufacturers, distributors, and vendors to standardize the market with proper labels, no adulteration, and more. Although many supported the bill, Governor Mike Parson didn’t and quickly axed it. He said some portions of the bill were superfluous since Missouri already has kratom protections intact. However, Christofanelli wasn’t done and tried again. 
Latest Bill 
In 2023, Rep. Christofanelli started from scratch because he believed there weren’t enough protections for kratom consumers. That’s why the rep told Missourinet his bill is simple at only a couple of pages because his goal is to put a framework in place. Christofanelli explained he wants customers to know what they’re purchasing. He explained, “We want things that are sold in the marketplace that say they’re kratom to actually be 100% pure kratom, and we want to make sure that only adults are using this.”
The lawmaker is also concerned about adulteration and said customers purchase products without knowing what’s inside. He said the problem is that stores can unknowingly sell these products, which could harm consumers. Additionally, Rep. Christofanelli added there are no restrictions from selling to minors. Because of these reasons, he wants a framework to ensure kratom is “safe and appropriate.”
Although a public hearing was held in March, there’s been no vote since then.
