Indiana became one of a handful of states that outlawed kratom back in 2014. At the time, state legislators didn’t believe it was beneficial, so they decided products should be banned, with no exceptions. Unsurprisingly, many kratom supporters have spoken out to overturn the ban. Now, they may have gotten their wish because a recent bill may make kratom legal in Indiana. 
2014 Ban 
In 2014, kratom began to gain traction in the United States, where more people started using it regularly. Although it increased in popularity, the broad public knew little about kratom. As a result, Indiana lawmakers took action and deemed kratom illegal in the state. Part of the reasoning was that legislators mistakenly labeled kratom as a synthetic cannabinoid, which it isn’t. As a result, vendors couldn’t sell any products, and citizens could face fines and more for possession.
House Bill 1500
According to WRTV, House Bill 1500 would decriminalize kratom and is progressing through Indiana’s legislative session. Estimates state that around 60,000 people in Indiana already use kratom, so it would make sense to legalize it. To further the case for revoking the ban, the American Kratom Association has stepped in to tout its benefits.
Under the House Bill, lawmakers would establish regulatory guidelines to keep kratom safe and to ensure manufacturers don’t adulterate products. The bill would require accurate labeling, so consumers would know exactly what they were getting. Next, the bill is headed to the Senate for further consideration.
