Kratom Decriminalization in Thailand
Here’s something to ponder – kratom is native to Thailand, but it’s been illegal in the country for decades. How can that be? Since the 1940s, the nation has taken a strong stance against the growing, possession, and sale of kratom. However, attitudes began to change in 2019 when the government gave the green light for the production, possession, and use of kratom in certain circumstances. In 2021, Thailand decided to remove even more restrictions. Let’s take a closer look at the current state of kratom in Thailand.
Pathway to Legalization
Once the Thai government removed kratom from its controlled substance list in 2020, this opened the door to legalizing kratom. Beginning on August 24, 2021, according to Lexology, new laws will decriminalize the “consumption, production, disposal, import, export, and possession of kratom, for any purpose and in any quantity or form.” By relaxing regulations, kratom laws will now reflect the greater societal acceptance of the plant.
Regulating Kratom Going Forward
Though legislators have paved the way for kratom, there will still be regulations. For example, there will be strict licensing requirements, and vendors can’t sell products to minors or pregnant or nursing women. Additionally, the government will clarify issues around advertising, labeling, and selling products. Kratom supporters can still expect some scrutiny around products.
