Kratom in the Northeast
The Northeast is known for many things. Cold, snowy winters, a large, diverse population, and being at the forefront of American culture are a few that come to mind. This region, however, hasn’t always been so hospitable to kratom. At some points, Vermont and Rhode Island have declared that kratom is illegal. The two states are now working to make some changes and make the Southeast Asian plant available to all. Here’s the latest of what’s going on in Vermont and Rhode Island.
Vermont
Vermont lawmakers are on the move to decriminalize and regulate various substances, including kratom. A few years back, legislators placed a couple of the alkaloids found in kratom on a list. Last year, the state decided it was time to decriminalize kratom. One lawmaker said, “People shouldn’t be criminalized for accessing these ancient treatments.” If approved, the current legislation would regulate the sale of kratom to ensure consumer safety.
Rhode Island
Rhode Island has a rocky relationship with kratom. In 2017, authorities placed two of the kratom’s main ingredients, 7-hydroxymitragynine and mitragynine, on a list, effectively criminalizing the plant. Lawmakers passed the ban in secret, so many folks didn’t understand the legal status for a while. At the beginning of 2019, a couple of lawmakers tried to make it legal, but it stalled. In 2021, Rhode Island decided once again to try and decriminalize the plant. If the ban is reversed, kratom could be legal in the state on September 1, 2021.
