Kratom in the News: The Ongoing Battle Over Kratom in the U.S.
The fight over kratom in the United States continues. While it hasn’t been scheduled as a dangerous substance as some officials would like it to be, it continues to be controversial. The FDA recently instructed U.S. Marshals to confiscate more than 207,000 units of dietary supplements suspected to be or contain kratom. As a result, a social media fight started broke out on Twitter between some unlikely sources. What happened? Let’s take a closer look.
FDA’s Stance on Kratom
According to the FDA, consumers should just say no to kratom. For the past few years, the FDA has questioned kratom and its use, including officials confiscating a large quantity of kratom for alleged safety concerns. The FDA’s Associate Commissioner for Regulatory Affairs said, “The FDA will continue to exercise our full authority under the law to take action against these adulterated dietary supplements as part of our ongoing commitment to protect the health of the American people.”
However, this is not the first time that the FDA has taken such drastic steps. In 2014, the FDA issued an import alert to allow field staff to detain items that look like or contain kratom without physical examination. It’s not surprising that this last kratom confiscation set off a war of words on Twitter.
Twitter Beef
According to the American Kratom Association, the former head of the FDA, Scott Gottlieb, has publicly expressed his feelings on kratom repeatedly. He had been part of the effort to get kratom banned years ago. After the most recent seizure of kratom, he tweeted, “We were prevented by HHS (Health and Human Services) with the scheduling of kratom.” Gottlieb went on to ask the current administration to ban kratom.
As you can imagine, this did not sit well with many, including the former Secretary for Health Brett Giroir. While Gottlieb has wanted kratom banned for some time, Giroir has consistently recommended not scheduling kratom as a dangerous substance. He believes there is not enough evidence to support the ban. On Twitter, Giroir responded to Gottlieb, “FDA’s recommendation was rejected [because] of embarrassingly poor evidence & data, and a failure to consider overall public health.”
